Courageous Kids Climbing and Boise Sunrise Rotary – Working together
Courageous Kids Climbing is an impressive organization with a surprisingly wide reach into many communities in the western United States. The Rotary Club of Boise Sunrise has been a proud financial supporter of CKC for the last two years. This is how Jeff Riechmann, the founder and executive director of CKC, describes their work as well as the project that the 2021 BSRC grant will enable.

Courageous Kids Climbing is an Idaho-based organization that provides free opportunities for children between the ages of 3-months and 103-years with special needs, physical or developmental, to experience the various forms of rock climbing at events held in Idaho, Washington, California, Nevada and Arizona. Our IceClimbers program provides free opportunities for kids with special needs to ice-skate with hockey teams in McCall. Climbing on Stuff provides school age children who are legally blind the opportunity to look at things like fighter jets and helicopters with their hands. First responders support most of our events, using the event as an opportunity to practice their rope rescue skills while also enhancing their skills for working with kids with special needs. The organization also organizes special training opportunities for first responders. The organization was formed in 2014 and since then has conducted over 70 events with over 900 participants. A significant number of our events are held in Ada and Valley counties of Idaho.
Right now, the equipment that we use allows us to hoist anyone under 300-pounds up the climbing wall to experience what it is like to be a rock climber. With this equipment, we will be able to add a new component to our menu. This component will provide an individual who is paralyzed from the waist down to pull themselves up the climbing wall without the assistance of our coaches, increasing the positive experience for the individual with physical challenges.
We can take individuals with physical challenges out of the horizontal world and let them experience the vertical world firsthand with the help of our coaches. This additional equipment will allow us to go a step further by taking the individual with limited physical abilities below the waist to pull themselves up the climbing wall, thus being able to feel a sense of accomplishment by having climbed the wall without assistance.
This is a compelling project to ponder and the Rotarians of Boise Sunrise are excited to help add this capability to the team at Courageous Kids Climbing. We value this collaboration striving to truly leave it better than we found it with a talented and motivated service partner like CKC. Service Above Self is written all over their work and we are proud supporters of this kind of life changing work.
