President's Message
Presidential Welcome from the Rotary Club of Boise Sunrise – John Lodal – July 4, 2022
Welcome to the Rotary Club of Boise Sunrise. We are a crew of community leaders who are committed to leaving it better than we found it as often as we can. We are a diverse team and I believe we enjoy a unique culture of putting aside differences and intentionally finding common ground to live Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self.

Reading this welcome message from the club’s president might have you asking yourself, “Why would I be interested in looking into possible membership? What is in it for me?” These are excellent questions that I fully understand. The United States is severely divided right now leaving its citizens in a state of unease. Our way of life in the USA is at risk and these chasms of ideological divide are deep and filled with fear and anger. At Boise Sunrise, we seek to push back against that divide. We are not here to change your core beliefs or your political preferences. But we are here to show that we can rise above these painful divisions and find common ground in serving our hometown and the world in general.
What you will find at Boise Sunrise is a collection of high character overachievers who seek to be welcoming, respectful, and possessing excellent listening skills. The pandemic has left a lasting scar on everyone in the world. We believe that collaborative work in service to those around us who are in need is an effective salve against these societal ailments. We focus on many avenues of service.
We actively advocate for youth in our support of Hope House in Marsing. We deliver dictionaries free of charge to all third graders at 12 different Boise Elementary Schools. The Everyday Leadership program that is now active at 7 Boise Elementary schools has shown tangible improvements in the grades and attendance of dozens of Boise 3rd – 5th grade students. That program got its start at Boise Sunrise. And we have made numerous grants to organizations like Life’s Kitchen, Girl Scouts, and Big Brothers Big Sisters in support of youth all around the Treasure Valley.
We are actively supporting peace and environmental sustainability with our development work at the new Wetland Peace Preserve park being created near Willow Lane in Boise. Primary financial support of this handsome new park is coming from Boise Sunrise along with hundreds of hours of volunteer labor to plant desired wetland species and to remove invasive and non-native species.
We strive to be role models who truly live Rotary’s 4-Way Test. And while we hold widely divergent political views, we do not let that stand in the way of our collaborative work to leave it better than we found it. We meet on Tuesday mornings at 7:00 – 8:00 AM at The Riverside hotel in Garden City. When the meeting is done, our members depart motivated and have that full day in front of them to address whatever comes next on their own “To Do” list. This is a fabulous way to start your Tuesdays.
We invite you to join us for breakfast if this value proposition of authentic fellowship, widespread and effective impact, and fun appeals to you. This is the way that I personally choose to push back against the ideological divide and the lingering malaise of the COVID pandemic. I seek to live a full life surrounded by individuals that I admire. Rotary consistently delivers on that objective for me. We’d love to meet you and buy you breakfast so you can meet our members and take a closer look. Please consider that an open invitation for any Tuesday. Let’s go change the world and have a lot of fun while we are doing this work.
